I’ve been interested in lockouts recently. Last year I tried to do a story on the NFL lockout, but the season started up again, and there went my story. It wasn’t unexpected. I had difficulty pitching it, because everyone assumed that America wouldn’t allow a world without football.

Hockey though, that’s a different matter. For whatever reason, the NHL has seemed to forget how to play recently. In the past twenty years, there have been three lockouts (one ongoing) and two canceled seasons — one because of an unresolved lockout and one because of a players’ strike. If players and owners don’t figure things out soon, there will be a third canceled season.

So, when I came up with the idea to do a story on the lockout and how it’s affecting the budding fanbase in Los Angeles, let’s just say I had a little wiggle room to do it. Here are the two versions I did for Marketplace and Take Two.
